What are the next options for CM Siddaramaiah after Resignation

After stepping down as Karnataka Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah still has several political paths open

Based on current Congress discussions and political signals, these are the most likely next options.

  1. National Congress role
The Congress high command reportedly wants Siddaramaiah to play a larger national role as one of the party’s strongest OBC leaders ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

  2. Possible positions could include:

  • AICC general secretary

  • Congress Working Committee strategist

  • Campaign chairman for southern states

  • National coordination role for welfare politics

  1. Rajya Sabha entry
There were reports that the Congress leadership offered him a Rajya Sabha position after resignation. However, Siddaramaiah reportedly declined it for now because he wants to remain active in Karnataka politics rather than move fully to Delhi.

  2. Power centre in Karnataka Congress
Even without the CM chair, Siddaramaiah is expected to remain the biggest mass leader in Karnataka Congress, especially among AHINDA communities (minorities, backward classes, Dalits).
    He may function as:

  • Mentor to the government

  • Election strategist for 2028

  • Internal balance against D. K. Shivakumar

  • Kingmaker in cabinet and ticket distribution

  1. Active electoral politics until 2028
Siddaramaiah has publicly said he is “going nowhere” and will stay politically active.
    That suggests he may:

  • Continue as MLA from Varuna

  • Campaign aggressively in 2028 assembly elections

  • Possibly attempt another comeback if Congress faces instability

  1. Retirement with advisory influence (least likely right now)
Some speculation suggested he could gradually reduce active politics after this term. But his recent statements indicate he is not ready for retirement yet.

Politically, the biggest question now is whether Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar will cooperate smoothly or whether Karnataka Congress will see a dual power-centre situation over the next two years.
