Over the years, he built a reputation as one of Congress’s strongest organisational leaders in Karnataka. He handled multiple ministerial portfolios including Urban Development, Energy, Irrigation, and Medical Education. But what truly made him nationally important was his role as the Congress party’s “troubleshooter.”
In 2017, during the dramatic Rajya Sabha election involving Ahmed Patel, Shivakumar famously housed Gujarat Congress MLAs at a Bengaluru resort to prevent defections. Earlier, he had played a similar role in protecting governments during political crises in Maharashtra and Karnataka. These episodes earned him the image of a crisis manager trusted by the Gandhi family leadership.
His political ambition became most visible after the 2023 Karnataka Assembly election victory. Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah were the two main contenders for the Chief Minister’s post. After days of negotiations, Congress chose Siddaramaiah as CM while Shivakumar accepted the role of Deputy Chief Minister and KPCC president.
Since then, Shivakumar strengthened his grip over the party organisation and government machinery. Political observers often described him as the Congress party’s most powerful Vokkaliga leader and its key strategist in Karnataka.
Now, in 2026, after Siddaramaiah’s resignation, Shivakumar is widely expected to take over as Karnataka’s next Chief Minister. Reports describe this as the culmination of decades of patience, negotiation, and political endurance.
His story is often described as the rise of a grassroots Congress worker who transformed himself into one of the most influential regional leaders in Indian politics.
