Apollo Spectra Hospitals, Bengaluru, successfully performed a complex single-stage hip replacement surgery on 61-year-old Mr. Sanjay Singh, giving him renewed mobility. This breakthrough is an important milestone for orthopaedic care and demonstrates the esteem that Apollo Spectra Hospital has in managing complex cases.

In August 2019, Mr. Sanjay Singh suffered an intertrochanteric fracture of the femur, and after multiple realignment surgeries and treatments, he continued to suffer pain, restricted movement, and ever-increasing limb length discrepancy. His condition worsened over time, developing a three-inch difference in the length of his legs and significant muscle loss and weakening around his hip.

Having consulted numerous doctors about his situation, Mr. Singh reached out to Dr. Pavan Chebbi at Apollo Spectra Hospitals, Bengaluru. After detailed investigations, Dr. Chebbi diagnosed a case of quite extensive bone erosion due to the old implant, extremely thin cortex, and a misaligned hip joint. The complexity of the case warranted a one-stage custom-made hip replacement to address limb length discrepancy and functional improvement. Customizing the hip prosthesis posed a major challenge due to the presence of an implant. However, Mr. Sanjay Singh’s patience and cooperation before the surgery allowed the medical team to take repeated measurements and imaging, enabling the precise design and production of a custom hip prosthesis.

The case was complex; however, on the day of surgery, the implant was removed successfully, and the hip replacement implant was precisely placed. Immediate post-operative recovery was uneventful. On the third day, post-surgery, there was a collection of fluid in the operated site measuring approximately 30ml, managed non-operatively with wound drainage and compression dressing. Mr. Singh started walking with partial weight-bearing within two weeks, and, by six weeks, he was able to walk independently on the full weight-bearing ability. Despite these difficulties, the surgery was successfully done, with proper positioning of the implants.

Commenting on the success of the surgery, Dr. Pavan Chebbi, Senior Consultant Orthopedics, Apollo Spectra Koramangala said: "Total hip replacement is a common surgery, but this particular case required meticulous planning to address bone loss, an old implant, and a significant limb length discrepancy. The outcome affirms the importance of advanced surgical procedures and patient-centered care."

Expressing his gratitude, Mr. Singh said: "I had lost all hope of ever walking normally again. The pain and limitations had taken a toll on my life. Thanks to Dr. Pavan Chebbi and the incredible team at Apollo Spectra Hospitals, I have regained my mobility and independence. Their expertise, care, and support have truly given me a new lease on life, and I couldn't be more grateful. This surgery has been nothing short of life-changing."

This inspiring success story underlines Apollo Spectra's commitment to providing excellence in its orthopedic care through individualized treatment plans and cutting-edge surgical expertise to enhance patient outcomes.
