Surgeons at Mallige Hospital, Bengaluru, successfully replanted a crushed avulsed forearm on a 21 year old garment factory worker. The significance of this replantation is due to the fact that severed limb was avulsed, torn off from the body; it was not a clean cut, where the chances of success are significantly higher.
“The patient and her family were committed to this operation in spite of being informed of the complexity and possible outcomes. Their positive approach, the fact that the patient was brought immediately to the hospital along with a well preserved detached limb and that the operation could be performed within the 6 hour window were some of the factors contributing to the success” shares Dr Mahesh G who performed the operation.Dr. Mahesh G is a Microvascular and reconstructive surgeon, with over 10 years’ experience, especially in trauma and onco reconstruction.
It took the team of surgeons, led by Dr Mahesh with Dr Manjunath Kumar, Consultant orthopedic surgeon and Dr Venkat Raju, Senior anesthetist at Mallige Hospital over 4 hours to perform the operation.
The patient is a 21 year old garment factory worker, married for just 3 months when the accident occurred. She is doing well now and the replanted forearm is responding well to the post-operative care.
“Successful replantation of an avulsed forearm is extremely rare, unlike in the case of a clean cut and we are happy that the surgical team at Mallige Hospital was able to prevent a young, recently married woman from losing her limb” says Mr Vikram Sreeram, MD, Mallige Hospital.
