Sanjali Centre for Odissi Dance presents ‘Navaayanam’, an annual dance festival to celebrate Odissi choreography. The festival will be held on 24th August, Saturday at Seva Sadan, Malleshwaram at 6PM. The current edition of Navaayanam celebrates the legacy of Odissi dancer Smt Sanjukta Panigrahi.

Navaayanam will bring together three reputed artists - Odissi danseuse Sharmila Mukerjee and her ensemble Sanjali, leading Bharatanatyam exponent Sathyanarayana Raju and Soundarya Igoor to showcase new choreographies in different classical dance forms. Navaayanam  meaning ‘new direction’ is a step towards exploring new frontiers in Odissi dance and encouraging artists to explore new themes within traditional Odissi repertoire. Known for curating ‘Pravaha’, an Odissi dance festival in memory of  Odissi legend Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, Navaayanam by Sharmila Mukerjee  is yet another pioneering to present Odissi to a larger audience.

The current edition of Navaayanam by Sanjali Centre for Odissi Dance celebrates Sanjukta Panigrahi as a remarkable performer and choreographer.Considered as one of the greatest disciples of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, Sanjukta was known for her artistic performances, creative vision and  innovative choreographies. As one of the foremost exponents of Odissi, Sanjukta’s performances in India and across the globe gave the art form a global recognition. To celebrate Smt Sanjukta’s flair for new choreographies and her contribution to Odissi,  Navaayanam showcases a series of  new compositions with unique themes brought forth in traditional Odissi format.

Navaayanam will open with a tribute to Smt Sanjukta Panigrahi on her 75th birth anniversary. Sharmila Mukerjee will inaugurate the evening with  ‘Shiva Stuti’ a solo piece choreographed by late Smt Sanjukta Panigrahi. This will be followed by a Kannada composition choreographed by Sharmila Mukerjee. The music for the same has been composed by Praveen D Rao.

The solo performance will be followed by ‘Sisira Geetam’, a group presentation by Sanjali ensemble. Sisira Geetam is based on Kalidasa's Ritusamhara and it showcases the glory of winter. The performance will bring out the colours of the season, the freshness of the paddy fields, the migrating birds and other nuances of the season of winter. The script for Sisira Geetam has been arranged by Pt Nityanand Mishra  and music has been composed by Shri Bijoy Jena.

This will be followed by a Bharatanatyam duet by Sathyanarayana Raju and Soundarya Igoor with live music. They will showcase varnam ‘Sarasijanabha' on Lord Vishnu.
