39-year old Raju, who was declared brain dead post a fatal accident, has given a new lease of life to 6 people, through organ donation. Raju, a farmer by profession, was brought to SPARSH Super Specialty Hospital, Yeshwanthpur on February 18, 2019 6:50 a.m, after sustaining severe head and leg injuries post a head-on collision in a two-wheeler road accident on the night of February 17 at 10:30 p.m. Raju, who lives with his wife and two children in Thattahalli village, Nagamangala, Mandya district was initially admitted to a local hospital but was then referred to SPARSH Super Specialty Hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU, where the Neurosurgery team declared him brain dead, post evaluation.
The victim’s family was counseled and consented for organ donation. The victim’s liver, kidneys, lungs, heart valves and corneas were successfully harvested for transplant. The harvested left kidney was transplanted onto a 12 year old girl suffering from a Chronic Kidney Disease at SPARSH Super Specialty Hospital, while the liver was received by another male patient at SPARSH.
The lungs have been absorbed by an elderly patient at BGS Global Hospitals, the right kidney has breathed life into another senior citizen at Sagar Hospitals. While the heart valves were sent to Manipal Hospital, the corneas were sent to Narayana Nethralaya.
The process of organ donation and retrieval was coordinated by Jeeva Sarthakathe (Transplant Authority of Karnataka) Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka.
